Building SpeedData Pro with AI sometimes felt less like software development and more like trying to control a forest full of exceptionally clever rats. Files vanished, workflows broke and “helpful” agents occasionally caused more damage than they fixed. But those disasters taught one of the most important lessons of the entire project: AI can be extraordinarily powerful — as long as you remain firmly in control.
What started as a simple experiment with AI and photography became something much bigger. Frustrated by endless metadata, prompts and different stock agency requirements, we began asking a different question: what if AI could be taught how stock contributors actually work? This is the story of the conversations, mistakes and lightbulb moments that eventually led us to build SpeedData Pro.
As a stock photography portfolio grows, so does the workload behind it. Titles, descriptions, keywords, different images and endless uploads — what once felt like a manageable part of the job gradually became a repetitive bottleneck. This is the story of how years of manual metadata turned “good enough” into frustration, growing backlogs and, eventually, one simple question: surely there had to be a better way?
A great photograph is only valuable if somebody can find it. After the shooting, selecting and editing are finished, there is still another crucial step: metadata. Titles, descriptions and keywords give search engines, stock libraries and potential buyers the information they need to discover an image. Exceptional photography creates the opportunity — exceptional metadata helps make sure it gets seen.
Taking the photographs is only the beginning. Back home, hundreds of wildlife images have to be reviewed, compared and reduced — checking sharpness, composition, backgrounds, behaviour and those tiny differences between almost identical frames. After hours of sorting, an entire wallaby shoot came down to just 17 photographs. And we hadn’t even started reviewing the video.
Sometimes the best wildlife shoots are the ones that don’t go to plan. What began as a photography session quickly became three hours of waiting, watching and filming as tiny wallaby joeys appeared from their mothers’ pouches. Capturing those fleeting moments required patience, long lenses and a willingness to change the plan completely — but getting the footage was only the beginning.
Uploading stock photography doesn’t have to mean hours of repetitive data entry.
