As far as popular photo locations go, the Brecon Beacons is a delightful and fruitful place to visit any time of year, but a winter visit is particularly magical when the sun shines on the snowy mountain tops.

We stopped in the car park opposite Storey Arms Outdoor Pursuits Centre. Storey Arms sits on the slopes of Pen y Fan, which at 886m, is the highest point in the Brecon Beacons National Park and southern Britain.

Just across the A465 road, opposite Pen Y Fan, towers the mighty Fan Fawr. Lofty enough to be challenging, but comfortably close to Pont Ar Daf and Storey Arms car parks and take-away vans.

POPULAR PHOTO LOCATIONS | BUT WHY NOT WALK TO PEN Y FAN?

When the snow is covering the mountains and the sun is out the circular routes behind Storey Arms are packed with people hiking and its very difficult to take photos without people in them. The mountain opposite Storey Arms is much quieter and not too much of an onerous walk. When you are carrying expensive photography equipment and there are slippery surfaces then this is an easier ask. In addition to this you get a really good view of the landscape and paths over Pen y Fan and Corn Ddu from this mountain.
