BARRY ISLAND TRADERS TAKE SMALL BUT SENSIBLE STEPS FORWARD IN PREPARATION
Some Barry Island traders have started to prepare for the time when the Government review the Coronavirus Lockdown rules in Wales.
CAREFULLY EASING LOCKDOWN WHERE AND WHEN ALLOWED
The first businesses to open are those who can offer take-away services. In fact these businesses were never forced by legislation to stop trading. They felt, however, that they had a social responsibility to close so as not to offer anything that might tempt the crowds of visitors we saw on the first weekend of lockdown.
Good on them, putting public health before business. Definitely the right decision despite how hard that must have been.
We see signs that businesses are starting making tentative preparations to ensure they have safe ways of operating. Changes are being made to ensure social distancing rules are being complied with so that businesses can trade safely, protecting their customers as best they can.
Boards reminding everyone of the 2 metre rule are being strategically placed, markers to ensure safe queueing, hand sanitizer on the door entrances and staff wearing masks while serving are some of the changes we have seen.
Businesses on The Knap have also started to serve take-aways and snacks to locals. Seating outside is being arranged 2 metres apart to ensure sufficient distance between tables.
So for now, locals can find a few places open to safely enjoy fish and chips, ice-cream, coffee and snacks as they take their daily exercise.
When the rules allow we should all make the effort buy a quick drink or snack on our walk, ride or run.
REMEMBER, BIG INTERNATIONAL CHAINS ARE STRUGGLING EVEN WITH HUGE RESERVES TO CALL UPON BUT …

We can only hope that the new ‘normal’, as lockdown eases, will provide enough local trade to sustain everyone until we can start welcoming day trippers and visitors back to this beautiful town.
